One of the most important steps on this journey to recovery is having a safe and supportive place to live. Journey House Foundation offers connections to recovery residences, also known as sober living homes, that can make the transitional recovery process easier to navigate.  Before you decide if a recovery residence is the best option for you, it is best to understand how a recovery residence works, and we are here to help!

What is a Recovery Residence ?

A Recovery Residence is a non-medical, substance-free living space designed to support individuals in recovery from substance use disorders. Unlike treatment centers or hospitals, recovery residences and sober living facilities are not clinical in nature. Instead, they provide a structured and sober environment that helps people transition back into everyday life.

For many, the period after completing treatment can be one of the most vulnerable times for relapse in substance use disorder and addiction. Returning directly to old environments or triggers may put sobriety at risk. A recovery residence offers a safe living alternative and a community where residents can focus on rebuilding their lives surrounded by others who share the same commitment to recovery.

The Purpose of a Recovery Residence is to:

  • Provide stability and accountability during early recovery.
  • Foster peer support, allowing residents to encourage and learn from one another.
  • Create a substance-free environment where healthy routines can be developed.
  • Help individuals transition from treatment to independence with guidance and structure.

What Does Life in a Recovery Residence Look Like?

While each drug and alcohol recovery residence may differ, most follow a consistent framework. Residents agree to live free of drugs and alcohol in exchange for their bed fees. This often includes participating in house responsibilities, engaging in ongoing treatment, attending support groups, and seeking employment. The focus is not only on sobriety, but also on personal growth, responsibility, and community connection.
